It’s August in 2017, halfway past the year, and i can categorically say that Nigeria has not witnessed a breakout musical character of any sort.
No hit song! No new artist with a song that has wowed the Nigerian musical sphere! Nothing! It has been worrisome and frustrating especially for we the bloggers on Naijaloaded.
And trust me, it hasn’t always followed this path:
In the chilly 2013, we had Burna Boy drop hot songs that topped charts, most notably ‘Like To Party’ and ‘Run My Race’.
The following year, there was Patoranking and ‘Mr Mad Over You’, Runtown.
2015 saw Mavin’s duo Korede Bello and Reekado Banks step into the limelight alongside the Yagi Master Lil Kesh. Kiss Daniel was buzzing too.
Last year saw Tekno and Humblesmith up the ante with jaw-dropping songs.
Then there was Mr Eazi. The 25-year old rapidly became a sensation in the country with ‘Skin tight’, featuring Ghanaian singer Efya.
That paved way for songs like ‘Sample you’, ‘Dance for me’ and of course ‘Hollup’.
Mr Eazi soon became the talk of the town. His metamorphic rise to stardom was startling.
And it even came with a prize.
Eazi, born Tosin Ajibade, scooped the Next Rated award at The Headies and Soundcity MVP Awards for ‘Best New Artist.
So why is 2017 as quiet as a mouse????
Yeah we have seen some artist step up their craft but there has been nothing exceptional.
I can only give exception of Small Doctor. Maybe cause i am a fan but his song ‘Penalty’ is making waves on the streets shaaa.
